Black History Month
Apples 4 the Teacher

Black History Month is celebrated annually in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. Recognition of black history originated in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as "Negro History Week". It was later celebrated as Black History Month. Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass.

Did you know that until the study of black history, blacks were absent from history books? Carter G. Woodson established the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. "Negro History Week" was intended to bring national attention to black people's contributions throughout history.

No Punishment
Don’t ever, ever use reading or writing as a punishment. Reading and writing should be fun!!!The goal is to teach your children/students that reading and writing are fun forms of entertainment. Using reading or writing as punishment will destroy any previous progress made. Let your children/students eat and drink, sit anywhere, and listen to music while they read and/or write then they will love to read and write for life.

Daily Reading Tip
Allow students to provide testimonials on a daily basis of strategies they use while they read. It is important for students to recognize one another's different learning styles and how they deal with adversity when reading.
