A beloved holiday tradition is back on the tracks for Mississippi residents this Christmas season.

This year, the festive, six-car holiday train with intricate displays inside and out will bring Santa Claus and his elves to visit children and families in 20 communities in eight states. The train will stop in Vicksburg on Nov. 26 at 4 p.m., in Pearl on Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. and in Meridian on Nov. 28 at 4 p.m.

Use #peer #mentorship to develop your leadership skills and to hone your SEL abilities. Students from different age groups should be paired together to impart advice on how to succeed in challenging classes.

Keep adults in mind. Examine the ambiance at the school as a whole. Determine and get rid of any regulations that could give students conflicting messages, including conduct codes that are against the principles of the institution. #SEL

Franchisors Say “Thank You” to Veterans with Free Food and Discounts

In honor of Veterans Day 2022, many franchises offer discounts and freebies to their customers who served — or are currently serving — in the U.S. military. From free meals and haircuts to discounted car services and health supplements, franchisors are finding new and creative ways to thank veterans for their service.

Veterans and Franchising

Veterans do well in franchising because they are trained to work in teams and have strong leadership skills. Veterans interested in franchise ownership can find many resources, including the International Franchise Association’s VetFran Program and the Small Business Administration’s Boots to Business initiative.

The franchise industry is known for its love of veterans. Many franchisors offer incentives to recruit veterans as franchise owners, and also as customers. From the number of deals we outline below, it’s clear that franchisors appreciate the commitment and sacrifice U.S. military veterans have made.

Veterans Day 2022: Franchise Deals, Freebies and Promotions

Chicken Salad Chick

The Chicken Salad Chick franchise offers military personnel a free meal on Veterans Day 2022. Service members must be in uniform or present a valid military ID to enjoy this deal.

Denny’s

At Denny’s, Veterans Day is an annual tradition. From 5 a.m. to noon, active and inactive military members can participate in the fast-casual franchise’s Build Your Own Grand Slam promotion. Veterans can pick four favorite foods from more than 10 menu options. These include buttermilk pancakes and eggs.

Golden Corral

For more than two decades, the Golden Corral franchise has hosted Military Appreciation Night as a way to thank veterans. Veterans Day 2022 is no different. Military heroes can get a free meal and drink at Golden Corral from 5 p.m. until closing on Nov. 14. The offer is for dine-in only and doesn’t apply to spouses or family members. No military ID is required to enjoy the deal.

Little Caesars

Veterans hankering for some pizza on Veterans Day 2022 can enjoy a free lunch combo at participating Little Caesars locations. This promotion lasts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes four slices of Deep Dish pizza and a 20-ounce soft drink. Veterans and military personnel must present proof of service to get the deal.

Olive Garden

With a military ID, veterans can receive a free meal from a predetermined menu at the Olive Garden. Veterans can pick from five popular options: Never-Ending Soup, Salad and Breadsticks, Cheese Ravioli, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Fettuccini Alfredo (above), and Chicken Parmigiana. The deal is good for dine-in only.

Red Lobster

At Red Lobster, military veterans can receive a free Walt’s Favorite Shrimp, Fries, and Coleslaw meal. This features six hand-breaded, butterflied and lightly fried shrimp served with cocktail sauce, french fries and coleslaw. This deal is good for dine-in and to get orders placed in the restaurant, and a military ID is required to redeem it.

Perkins

On Veterans Day 2022, participating Perkins locations offer military personnel and veterans a free Magnificent Seven breakfast. The meal includes two eggs, three pancakes and two bacon strips or sausage.

Smoothie King

In honor of Veterans Day 2022, select Smoothie King locations offer veterans a free 20-ounce smoothie. Proof of military service is required, and it is good for in-store orders only. Check your local Smoothie King location for exact times of the promotion.

Chili’s

On Veterans Day 2022, military personnel can enjoy a free Margarita Grilled Chicken, Cajun Chicken Pasta, or Just Bacon Burger meal at Chili’s. The deal is good in-store only.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers

F\reddy’s Frozen Custard and Streakburgers, Veterans Day 2022

On Veterans Day 2022, the Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers franchise will distribute meal cards for a free Original Double Combo. The meal card is valid through Nov. 30.

IHOP

Veterans Day is an annual tradition at IHOP. Veterans receive free Red, White & Blue Pancakes or a Pancake Combo, with a valid military ID. This deal is good in-store from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Buffalo Wild Wings

Military personnel can enjoy 10 boneless wings and fries for free on Veterans Day 2022. The deal is good both in-store and with takeout orders with proof of military service. BWW GO Locations will be included for walk-in and orders at the counter.

Sport Clips

On Veterans Day 2022, participating Sport Clips locations offer free haircuts to veterans with proof of military ID. Sport Clips also honors veterans with its Help a Hero Scholarship program, which provides veterans and service members with scholarships for college and trade schools.

Dunkin’

Veterans can indulge in the sweetness of a free doughnut at Dunkin’ on Veterans Day 2022. No purchase or military ID is required.

7-Eleven

When veterans use the 7-Eleven app this Veterans Day 2022, they’ll score a free coffee or Big Gulp drink.

Wendy’s

At Wendy’s, military personnel and veterans can enjoy a free small breakfast combo with a valid military ID on Veterans Day. No purchase is necessary for the deal.

Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii

Free coffee anyone? This Veterans Day 2022, veterans and active-duty military can enjoy a free cup of coffee from participating Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii locations. The coffee franchisor has the Cup O’ Joe program, which accepts donations that go directly to the purchase of coffee for U.S. service members. Since the inception of the program, Bad Ass Coffee has shipped over 14,500 bags of coffee to service personnel around the world.

Fazoli’s

When veterans go to participating Fazoli’s locations this Veterans Day 2022, they can get a free regular spaghetti meal with meat or marinara sauce.

Melting Pot

With the purchase of a four-course meal, veterans can eat for free at select Melting Pot locations. A valid military is needed to redeem the offer.

The Vitamin Shoppe

From Nov. 11 – 13, veterans receive a 25% discount on their purchase at in-store Vitamin Shoppe and Super Supplements locations. To redeem the deal, veterans have to show proof of service.

Hooters

This Veterans Day 2022, Hooters offers vets a free entree from its Veterans Day menu with the purchase of a drink. Popular Veterans Day menu items include the Buffalo Chicken Salad, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Hooters Burger, and a 10-Piece Boneless Wings. The deal is good dine-in only, and a military ID is required.

Applebee’s

Since 2008, Applebee’s has honored military personnel with a free meal on Veterans Day. Veterans Day 2022 is no exception. Veterans can choose from seven items including a 6 ounce Top Sirloin, Double Crunch Shrimp, Fiesta Lime Chicken, Chicken Tenders Platter, Classic Bacon Cheeseburger, Oriental Chicken Salad, and Three-Cheese Chicken Penne. Veterans will also receive a $5 bounce back card to redeem for dine-in, To Go or delivery within a three week redemption period.

California Pizza Kitchen

For Veterans Day 2022, the California Pizza Kitchen franchise offers veterans and active military a free entree and nonalcoholic drink from a pre-selected menu. The promotion is good for dine-in only, and military personnel must present a valid military ID. To show support for Disabled Americans Veterans, a non-profit organization, the pizza franchisor is hosting a fundraiser from Nov. 7 – 9 and will donate 20% of sales to the organization.

Ben’s Soft Pretzels

Veterans with a craving for pretzels can get a free one at participating Ben’s Soft Pretzels franchise locations this Veterans Day 2022.

Biggby Coffee

Veterans can get a free 16 ounce beverage of their choice at participating Biggby Coffee locations on Veterans Day. A valid ID is needed to get the deal.

Great Clips

Great Clips offers veterans a complimentary haircut or a free haircut card to use later. This offer is good at participating locations.

Wienerschnitzel

Health-conscious military members can go to Nékter Juice Bar for a free 16 ounce juice or smoothie on Veterans Day 2022. The deal lasts all day, and a military ID has to be presented to redeem it.

For veterans looking to get some work done on their cars on Veterans Day 2022, select Meineke franchises offer either a free basic oil change or 50 percent off a synthetic oil change. Contact your local shop for more details.

Venture X

Through the month of November, service members can get a complimentary membership at participating U.S. locations of Venture X, a franchise that provides coworking spaces. According to a Venture X press release, Terry Wallace, veteran and owner of the Venture X location in Bethlehem, Penn., came up with this Veterans Day special. This deal includes shared office amenities and workspaces, networking opportunities with other business members and invitations to events. Free high-speed internet and complimentary coffee and refreshments are also included.

Valentine's Day Facts

St. Valentine's Day falls on February 14th of each year. Although the name is Saint Valentine's Day, most people refer to the day as Valentine's Day. It was originally a day to celebrate Saint Valentinus, who performed weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to marry. He was imprisoned for this, as well as for ministering to Christians. Saint Valentinus wrote a letter to the daughter of his jailer before he was executed. His letter was signed ‘From your Valentine'. He was buried on February 14th. Valentine's Day was not associated with romantic love until the middle ages. After St. Valentine was buried, Julia, the daughter of his jailor, planted an almond tree with pink blossoms near his grave. The almond tree today is a symbol of lasting friendship and love.

In 1537, King Henry the Eighth declared that February 14th was a holiday. King Henry the Eighth had most of his wives executed because they did not give birth to a son. By the 1700s in England it began to resemble the Valentine's Day we know today. At this time lovers began to express their love with gifts of flowers, candy and cards, which were called 'valentines'.

A great lesson to apply real-world math skills and Thanksgiving. A lesson you can do with your students is gather food ads from the local grocery store chains around Thanksgiving. First, you can give them a budget and a set number of guests and have them plan a meal. This uses many math skills (especially multiplication, where the prices of turkey are given in per lb.). Also, you can have them compare the meals in two different grocery stores. This is truly real world connections.

The first day of school for many school districts is on the day after Labor Day (first Monday in September) and other of us, mid to late August. Every year students start school and every year parents wonder what to do. Whether it’s your child’s first day at preschool or the start of fifth grade, there are always new challenges. Children as well as parents, often struggle with saying goodbye at the classroom door and hello to the start of a new year. If so, try reading books about starting school like “I Am Absolutely Too Small for School” by Lauren Child and others.

On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. Memorial Day is a patriotic holiday in the United States. It is celebrated on the last Monday in May each year. It began as a day to honor the men and women who died in the Civil War. On Memorial Day we honor all the men and women who have died in all the wars fought by the United States. Memorial Day is celebrated in many ways. Many businesses, schools, and banks close in honor of the holiday. Often, families go to the cemetery to add flags to the grave sites of war veterans. Maypole dance, with origins in the 18th Century, began as a traditional or artistic dance popular in Italy and France. Eventually, traveling dancing troupes performed it in London theaters, thus bringing this traditional dance to larger audiences. An English teacher training school adopted the maypole dance and soon it had spread across most of central and southern England. The dance became part of the repertoire of physical education for girls and remained popular in elementary schools in both England and the United States well into the 1950s.

Don’t Put Out the Trash

During the week leading up to Earth Day, arrange with the custodian not to remove the trash and recycling from your classroom. On Earth Day, have your students weigh the trash and recycling they generated (weigh trash separately from recycling). Over the next week, challenge your students to toss and use less, plus recycle more. After a week, have students weigh the trash and recycling again and calculate the decrease (hopefully!) in trash weight and increase in recycling weight. This time of year, many people develop spring fever. Invite each student to think of a cure for spring fever and then write about it. Put the pages together to make a class book.

The windy weather of March makes it perfect for flying a kite. Set out colorful construction paper and a selection of art materials. Invite each student to use the provided materials to create a kite. Have them to write a description of their kite.

In March 1990, President George Bush publicly declared that he didn’t like broccoli and wouldn’t eat it. Have students write a letter to George Bush telling him whether or not they agree with his opinion about broccoli.

Have students write words that remind them of spring. Then direct them to write a poem about spring that uses several of the words.

About Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated each year on March 17^th. In Ireland, Saint Patrick's Day is both a holy day and a national holiday. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland as he was the one who brought Christianity to the Irish.

According to legend, Saint Patrick used a shamrock to explain about God. The shamrock, which looks like clover, has three leaves on each stem. Saint Patrick told the people that the shamrock was like the idea of the Trinity, that in the one God there are three divine beings: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The shamrock was sacred to the Druids, so Saint Patrick's use of it in explaining the trinity was very wise.

Daylight Saving Time

When people first started using mechanical clocks each town/city would set their town clock by measuring the position of the sun. Every city would be on a slightly different time. This eventually became confusing and the railroad wanted a standard time that all of the towns in a certain area would go by. This led to using a standard time in the United States in the early 1900's.

Daylight Saving Time gives us the opportunity to enjoy sunny summer evenings by moving our clocks an hour forward in the spring.

TIP: Change the batteries in your smoke detectors when you change your clocks because Daylight Saving Time provides a convenient reminder.

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 12, 2017. People will have an extra hour of daylight in the evening.

When to set your clocks forward: Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 12, at 2:00 A.M. Remember to “spring ahead” and set your clocks forward 1 hour. TIP: Do this Saturday night when you go to bed.

When to set your clocks back: Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 5, at 2:00 A.M. Now, we “fall back” by setting our clocks back one hour.

Have students write and explain, in paragraph form, three advantages of DST and three disadvantages of Daylight Saving Time.
